Greetings from the Giving Garden! We have had a great start to the new year. The garden is enjoying the mild winter and early spring with weekly harvests of spinach, collard greens, kale, lettuce, cilantro, turnips, carrots, and radishes. All donations continue to go to the community through our partners at WestAid Food Pantry and Las Vegas Trail Rise Community Center.
January and February are a busy time as we prepare for the spring and summer growing seasons. This year, the garden planted over 1000 onions and over 160 potato plants. The team started all tomato, pepper, eggplant, and sweet potato plants for the garden, community members, and partner school gardens. If you are interested in any plants for your garden, please let us know!
We have begun planting native perennials to attract pollinators and provide habitat for the monarch butterflies. Big shout out to the Native Plant Society of Texas for funding this amazing project.
Finally, the garden had a great time supporting community events that included school field trips from Everman Academy, Boulevard Heights, and Jane Justin School; professional development opportunities for school garden educators with Made Greene and Cook's Children; and weekly volunteer opportunities for the community.
Thank you to all volunteers and organizations that have helped in this important work here at Ridglea Giving Garden!
